Washington Governor Rejects Proposal Cut for State's Largest Wind Farm

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee overturns a recommendation to decrease the installation size of the state's biggest wind farm, giving a boost to the $1.7 billion venture.

Renewables

Governor Jay Inslee of Washington has rejected a suggestion to halve the plans for the Horse Heaven wind farm, which would have involved a significant reduction in the number of wind turbines and solar arrays. The initial proposal consisted of up to 222 wind turbines spread over 24 miles in eastern Washington, alongside three solar arrays covering substantial land. Despite the presence of endangered ferruginous hawk nests prompting a reduction recommendation, Gov. Inslee has directed a reassessment to potentially expand the project's scope. Inslee's decision aligns with his environmental focus, aiming to meet the state's escalating renewable energy needs that could almost double by 2050. Local opposition to the wind farm has been met with consideration for cultural heritage and consultation with tribal communities to ensure sustainable development.
