Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Automobile Co. have secured an agreement to utilize the Freelander brand for a forthcoming lineup of electric vehicles, according to a joint statement issued on Wednesday. Manufacturing operations will be managed by CJLR, their 50-50 joint venture, leveraging Chery's production resources and components. In pursuit of a more substantial share in the prominent Chinese auto market, Jaguar Land Rover aims to cater to the evolving preferences of adventure-seeking consumers by introducing innovative electric and hybrid vehicle options. The decision to produce the Freelander model as an electric vehicle aligns with Tata Motors Ltd.'s strategy to bolster its electric division for profitability. The initial release of the Freelander EV will target the Chinese market, with future plans for global export. The CJLR partnership established in 2012 will sustain its production of gasoline vehicles while embarking on this electric vehicle venture. The commencement date for Freelander production has not been disclosed; the model, previously discontinued in 2015, will undergo reinvention in pursuit of expanding into the electric vehicle segment.
