Challenges Faced by America's Power Grid Amid AI Advancements
The impact of Gen AI architecture on the US power grid draws concern, emphasizing significant cost challenges, according to Baird strategist Ted Mortonson.
Infrastructure
The US grid is a monumental system, producing 1,250 gigawatts (GW) of electricity across 9,200 generating units. Known as 'the world's largest machine,' it encompasses 600,000 miles of transmission lines, capable of circling the Earth 24 times. Notably, the average age of transformers, transmission lines, and grid equipment stands at 40-50 years old. The development of AI technologies poses substantial challenges to the reliability and efficiency of America's aging power infrastructure.
